Served with leading book publishing companies in key editorial and administrative positions for over three decades.
My general duties involved all aspects of the companies' publishing operations, providing hands-on management of a portfolio of an average of 120 new titles published annually. Official responsibilities included coordinating and monitoring the entire production cycle of book projects from development of proposals for new publications through to print production. Particular duties included in-house reviewing of manuscripts for publication and liaising with members of the academia to arrange external peer reviews processes, drafting and issuance of publishing contracts for authors, overseeing the general editorial process and managing a team of freelance editorial and prepress production service providers (copyeditors, proofreaders, indexers, formatters, graphic artists, illustrators, cover designers, etc.) and generally overseeing production schedules to facilitate the timely completion of book projects. Other promotional and administrative duties included preparation and management of web site and social media content and varied publicity materials, liaising with the U.S. Library of Congress to provide data and information on new projects and filing for cataloging-in-publication (CIP) data for all new publications, participating in promotional programs and events, conferences, workshops, and exhibitions among which were National Book Expos, annual conferences of subject associations including the African Studies Association (ASA) and the African Literature Association (ALA).
