Sue Campbell

Sue Campbell – Designer

I love books. I love writers. I love designing books that help other people love books. It's a love fest for book nerds.

Overview

I'm a book designer who creates covers and interiors across many genres. You'll see real variety in my samples, because I believe it's important to let the book guide the style that's best suited to the subject and the target market. I'm no prima donna—the book and the author are the stars—my job is help you shine.

I specialize in highly-visual custom volumes, including histories, and coffee table type books. Designing interiors for these challenges me to present the content in a beautiful way that also increases understanding, and gently leads the reader through the story. I have produced children's books in print and interactive ebook. I work with both publishers, and indie authors to bring their visions to life.

Work experience

Self-employed

Jul, 2004 — Present

Freelance book design practice in which I provide cover and interior layout design for trade books across genres. I service small regional publishers, and self-publishing authors. In recent years I have worked with a publisher in Las Vegas, NV—so you'll see lots of Vegas-centric books. But, that's not all! I love working on all types of books, fiction and non-fiction. A specialty is coffee-table type books and highly-illustrated histories. I also am expert in producing ebooks, including those with complex formatting. I have produced an interactive children's ebook.

I also produce marketing materials for book promotion. I enjoy working with authors—and consulting with them and providing guidance is part of the service. Well-versed in all types of print production and prepress, as well as uploading books and meta-data to publishing and print services.

Sopris West Educational Services (Voyager Sopris Learning - new name)

Sep, 2000 — Jul, 2004 (almost 4 years)

Company Art Director for curriculum and ancillary products. This educational publisher produced Elementary—High School curriculum materials/textbooks and ancillary products for at-risk students and teachers. I was responsible for product design and lead a team of 10 design/production artists. Our products ranged from a complete Pre-school/Kindergarten curriculum to behavioral texts for teachers and counselors. We designed the ReadWell elementary reading program and the Language! remedial language arts curriculum. After working in educational publishing I made the transition to trade publishing design.
