Audra Spiven

Audra Spiven – Editor

I've been employed with a small publisher since 2009. I have past experience with fiction and nonfiction and can't wait to work with you!

Overview

My main goal is to help you communicate what you want to say in the best way possible! One of my top skills is preserving an author's unique style while helping writers learn how to communicate their thoughts more concisely. I do regular editing and proofreading work. I'm here to help you polish a finished manuscript, not grow your napkin outline into a full manuscript. I've been editing and proofreading since I joined my high school's newspaper and literary magazine staffs in the early 2000s. In college I copy edited the school newspaper, and a few months after graduating with my BA in English education, I got my first job in the publishing industry as an editor for a small self-publishing company in Oklahoma. While there, I worked on everything from copyright and trademark manuals to cookbooks to memoirs and biographies to fantasy, historical, romantic, and science fiction. In 2009 I joined my current employer, a Christian publisher in Kansas City. I started out working on books for youth pastors, and have since moved into theological texts and small group resources and curriculum. I am currently in a graduate program to obtain an MA in theological studies. Theology is what I work on daily, but I'm comfortable with almost any type of manuscript.

Working with me is a simple process. I'll read your manuscript, offer feedback directly within the text, and send it back to you within the promised time frame. I typically fix grammar and work to make your style and voice consistent throughout the manuscript. I will work according to the latest Chicago Manual of Style. I will highlight major changes and/or suggestions, and all the power to go ahead with or discard an editorial suggestion is completely yours. This is a collaborative, not an authoritarian, process!

On any given day when I'm not at work you can find me in my favorite oversize leather armchair either binging on Netflix or reading a book on my Kindle, with a beagle (or two) in my lap.
