Annabel Brandon

Annabel Brandon – Designer

Specialising in typography and typesetting. Non-fiction sports and education.

Overview

I'm an editorial designer specialising in typography and typesetting—nothing pleases me more than a well-set page! I spent the last five years in London, successfully honing this skill whilst working on a number of sport and lifestyle magazines. Latterly I worked at the internationally acclaimed educational publisher, Macmillan Education, where I began working on book covers and mechanicals and found my true love.

I currently split my time between London and New York, studying Typeface Design at Cooper Union.

Work experience

Self-employed

Apr, 2016 — Present

A range of printed projects including book covers and hand-lettered typographic commissions.

Macmillan Education

Dec, 2014 — Apr, 2016 (over 1 year)

Worked on mock designs for educational courses teaching English as a second language which included mechanicals and cover design.

I was also the lead cover designer and typesetter for adult international test papers created in partnership with Trinity College. With a small print-run of 4,000, it is primarily for the Italian speaking markets and the first joint venture of Trinity College and Macmillan Education. Cover designs confirmed within the first draft, allowing the project to get ahead of schedule.

The Ski Club of Great Britain

Apr, 2014 — Nov, 2014 (7 months)

Re-design members' magazines; ski+board, and Elevation (including features, covers, adverts, advertorials, FOB, photography shoots, design templates). The new design was well received and in a survey of 200 randomly selected members, 90% stated that ski+board was a 'valuable part of their membership' at the end of the 2014/15 season. Prior to my working within the company, it was scheduled to be cancelled due to a lack of perceived interest from the members.

TriNorth Communications Ltd

Oct, 2011 — Nov, 2014 (about 3 years)

Lead designer and occasional photographer for Netball, a quarterly magazine delivered to over 80,000 members – one of the biggest titles in its respective sporting field at the time. It contributed to the success of National Governing Body, England Netball winning the BT Sport Industry Awards 2014.

I also contributed to the design of a number of sports and lifestyle magazines, All Out Cricket, Hockey, Grid Iron (the only American football magazine in the UK) and Sportsister.

Nonsense London

Aug, 2011 — Sep, 2011 (about 1 month)

H2 Creative Media

Oct, 2010 — Aug, 2011 (10 months)

When I send an MS to a designer, I often indicate either in notes or laying out things as best I can in Word in a very rough amateurish way. A bad designer basically copies out my rough sketch, or completely ignores my notes and does it in a way that doesn't fit the project at all. Annabel does what a good professional designer does, creating something new and beautiful and professional-looking...

Annabel was extremely thorough and professional. She understood the project and my needs very well, asked good questions and was responsive and flexible. I like that she provided a full timeline of our collaboration so we both knew what was expected when. The cover and interior sample ideas were lovely and extremely professional. I'm very happy with the result. She's a true professional.

This is the second time that I have worked with Annabel and I am even more impressed than before. This time the brief was a lot more complicated and the first draft, that Annabel provided, was nothing near to what I had in my head. I panicked as I'm very new at this but got in touch with her and explained in clearer terms what I was after and a completely different draft came winging back. It w...

I am new to Reedsy and missed a few things, Annabel was patient and quick to help. I also really liked how she formatted the book.
