Overview

I am a publications specialist with over 40 years of experience. In 2014, I added a professional certificate in Digital Publishing from the University of Washington to my toolbox. I stay current with industry trends and techniques through constant continuing education. My skillset covers all of the aspects of project management—from editing through publication. I can assemble a team of experts to suit your needs and budget or be a part of YOUR team in many capacities.

I understand your needs as an author because in my "spare time" I write fiction and am finalizing a middle-grade novel for publication. As a non-fiction author, I have had my byline appear in publications as varied as American Girl Magazine, Stars and Stripes, and ParentMap—a PNW regional parenting monthly.

Work experience

Owner/Designer

Self-employed
January, 1993 – Present (about 28 years)

I started my first freelance business in San Antonio in 1980 and opened CW&I in 1993 when I moved to Seattle. At that time I chose to specialize in publications—primarily magazine, journal, and book design and project management.
I have worked with professional organizations, self-publishing authors, large publishing forms (Bloomsbury Press, Taylor & Francis, Purdue University Press), and a small independent press (River Lily Press).
Though I like the lucrative dependability of magazine work, I now want more time for my own writing and thus want to build my book design business back up. I am detail-oriented, a typography master, understand how to stay on budget, and meet deadlines. I have worked with clients all over the U.S. and internationally and can provide client recommendations as needed.

March, 1980 – December, 1992 (almost 13 years)

Along with my partner, photographer Chuck Williams, I ran a successful full-service design and production agency in San Antonio, Texas.
Our clients included many of the city's largest businesses including Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital, Church's Fried Chicken, Quincy Lee (real estate), and various smaller companies and non-profit organizations that were near and dear to my heart (Sunshine School for Deaf Children, The Mind Science Foundation, The League of Women Voters, and others).
