Lex Orgera

Lex Orgera – Editor

Former publisher, editor, and author specializing in developmental and line edits of children's picture books and adult nonfiction.

I bring a fresh, language-driven perspective to picture book, MG, and YA editing. Titles I've edited have been recognized on "Best of" and "Notable" lists by the American Library Association, Kirkus Reviews, the National Council of Teachers of English, School Library Journal, Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and the Texas Library Association, and have received honors from the Arnold Adoff Poetry Award, the Paterson Prize for Books for Young People, the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award, and the White Ravens List from the International Children’s Library.

I've also edited a long and varied list of books for adults! Message me if you want to see more of those (a few are listed on this profile).

*Please note that Reedsy's recommendations for rates do not work for picture books. Reedsy's word count rates are meant for novels, memoir, etc. Long books, not picture books, which require a different skillset.

About Me:

I hold a B.A. in literature and an M.F.A. in creative writing, as well as a certificate in copyediting. I've written and published two books of poetry and a memoir-in-fragments, taught college writing at several institutions, and was the assistant director of a college writing center for several years. I was the publisher and primary editor at Penny Candy Books for seven years and currently edit at Microcosm Publishing in addition to freelance editing.

I offer developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and any combination thereof. I provide an essay-letter alongside any in-text edits. I enjoy working with authors at every step, from ideation to finished product, and I take pride in developing a good rapport with my clients while we make books that sing.

I am so happy and grateful that I had Alexis edit my children's picture book. Alexis has that rare combination of being both a gifted editor and writer (not to mention founder of a multi-award winning children's book press). And it shows. She not only brought out the narrative arc of my story, but also suggested delightful details that made it sing. I also appreciated her poetic sensibility, wh...

Working with Alexis was great. She is knowledgable, a good communicator, and professional. I learned so much from her and her edits. She really takes time to explain her edits. I hope to work with her again!

Alexis was thorough and most importantly got to the heart-of-the matter as to what I was looking for. Highly recommended.
