Jessica Bell - Designer

Athens, Kentrikos Tomeas Athinon, Greece

I'm an Aussie award-winning graphic designer (& author & singer) who lives in Greece. I specialize in book covers for indie authors.

Overview

I began my career as a graphic designer when I self-published my first book as an author, a poetry collection called Twisted Velvet Chains, back in 2011. Being the type of person that 100% believes in the phrase ‘if there is a will there is a way,’ I embarked on a self-taught design journey. 1) Because I was penniless, and 2) Because I’ve always loved a creative challenge.

Very soon after my design debut, I started designing covers for author friends as favours. I didn’t charge back then, as it was just a fun way to make use of my creative energy. Until one of my friends told me I had real talent, and that I should start a business. I took her advice, and since then I have designed hundreds of covers for indie, traditional, and hybrid authors, many of which have hit bestseller lists, and won awards. One has even graced the shelves of WH Smiths at Heathrow airport.

Being an author myself, I fully understand the need to be able to incorporate your vision into your book cover. I allow you to do this while simultaneously hitting the right target audience, nailing a professional design, and adding a bit of extra artistic flair. (See below for testimonials.) That is why before I get started, I’ll have you fill in a very detailed client questionnaire that provides me with all the information I need to give you exactly what you want. Sometimes without you even knowing you wanted it.

I pride myself on prompt friendly service and an iterative design process. And as I walk in an author’s shoes, I am very sensitive to my clients’ needs.

I am also the Publisher of Vine Leaves Press, the Coordinator of the Writing Day Workshops which take place throughout the United States, and I make a second living as an editor/writer for English Language Teaching publishers worldwide, such as Pearson Education, HarperCollins, Macmillan Education, Education First and Cengage Learning.

TESTIMONIALS

"I am a first-time indie author with a just-released novel. But I have worked with three different trade and academic presses on four different books over the years (I'm a historian). I say all that to say this: my contact with Jessica Bell was absolutely super. You can see her talent in her great portfolio online. Well, her approach to work is professional, efficient, gracious. She was very careful to set up a dialogue with me to understand a kind of complicated (I hope not confused) novel, and then she worked with me until she produced the exact cover I wanted (though I had never thought of anything like it). If this novel flies, I will absolutely be emailing her again. I can't think of anyone I have run into in my years of writing who has been more professional and more impressive."

Hunt Tooley
Author of Anima & the Goat

"I would like to commend Jessica Bell for the fantastic job she’s done on the new cover for I Stopped Time. This is my best-selling novel, but I have always felt it could reach a wider audience. In the past, I have always been heavily involved in the cover design process, sourcing the images, coming up with the concept for the design, and then employing a graphic designer to execute it. On this occasion, I decided to take a step back. I felt that there were distinct advantages in working with a cover designer who is also an author. Jessica asked me to provide five short excerpts which reflected the themes of the novel. Other than the fact that I wanted the cover to sit comfortably within my existing brand-image, I handed over complete creative control. This didn’t mean that I wasn’t involved in the process – in fact, the reverse was true. At each stage, I was given choices. For example, when I suggested that more contrast was required in terms of colour, rather than simply work with what we had, I was given four different colour options. If you are concerned that you will not have face-to-face contact, let me reassure you that dealing by email on a project of this nature won’t be a problem. Jessica seemed to instinctively know when I needed to be left alone to make a decision and when I needed a little push. The whole process felt easy, Jessica is incredibly efficient and her design service is very competitively priced. But more important than pricing, I feel that I now have the right cover going forwards."

Jane Davis
Award-winning author of Half-truths and White Lies and I Stopped Time

"I commissioned Jessica to design the cover for my noir thriller, Boyle's Law. The entire process, from initial brief to final design, was a blast. I was particularly impressed by the very different ideas she produced to begin with, and then again by the level of detail when finessing the final cover. I guess the best endorsement I can give is that I will be asking her to design the covers for my other titles. Five star service."

LG Thomson
Author of Thrillers with Attitude

"The book cover designer, Jessica Bell, worked through a series of ideas and images to design a cover that suited the mood of my book, Maggie’s Child. When I saw the first draft I knew she understood what I was trying to portray. When I saw the completed cover I was blown away, she really captured my story. Her talent is to be admired and her enthusiasm is infectious. Patience and a creative eye, are two of her qualities. Her professionalism: flawless. Highly recommended."

Glynis Smy
Author of historical romance with a twist

"I was very, very impressed with the quality of Jessica Bell's designs, as well as her professionalism. She really pays attention to the brief, but also brings her own ideas and sensibilities. She turns work around quickly and is very detailed and professional in her communications. Best of all, she does amazing covers. I needed a new front cover design for a big mass market promotion in a major book retailer, and the fiction buyer signed off on it happily. I can't wait to see the new books in the stores now--and I can't recommend her highly enough."

Piers Alexander
The Bitter Trade – PEN Factor Winner, Global ebook Award Winner

"I found Jessica Bell’s website after a long, and at times frustrating search for a book cover designer. Having sacrificed much of my available time for several years in the writing of my novel, I was desperate to find a designer I could trust and who could bring my story to life on just one page. I was impressed with Jessica’s portfolio, and after contacting her, I was immediately impressed by her, also. As a newbie, I hadn’t really considered the unbelievable anticipation felt at the point of cover creation – until I went through it. And, I have to say, I’m glad I went through that process with Jessica. She was brilliant, and the final design is everything I could have hoped for; vibrant colours, haunting imagery, dramatic scenery, and effective type setting. It was an absolute pleasure working with Jessica, and I will not hesitate to use her for my next books. If you are in that conundrum, like I was, about which company to choose to make your baby come to life, you would be hard pushed to find a higher quality service, product and price anywhere. Thank you, Jessica."
